What’s Going Right?

The key to life is in what you believe. If you believe you are broken and can’t be fixed you will stay broken. Why? Your brain believes you. In fact, your brain will start to reinforce your brokenness by pointing out every failure you had past and present.

You can fix this. You can let your mistakes become good information instead of your identity. This allows me to not deny what happened but use this information from doing it again.

Second, I encourage you to focus on what’s going right. This is different for everyone. For some it’s that you got out of bed for 5 minutes, (been there). Others it’s you made it to work today. What you are looking for is to create positive momentum. I’ll finish this post with a horse story.

I got Courage several years ago. Her behavior was horrible. Anything you asked her to do she gave a hard no to and could get some big behavior. I had two options. I could discipline her and make her work harder every time until I won. My other option was to reward behavior I liked. I chose the latter. In her case, it started with if I took a step towards her and she didn’t try and leave that got rewarded. She was 19 at the time, and because of that, most people would say that it was ridiculous rewarding something as simple as that. She knows better. Here’s the deal, should I have had to do that at 19? Nope. If I didn’t though, she would have never gotten better.

I did this through every behavior she had. Pretty soon she figured out that when she was with me, she was safe. That put her brain into yes I’ll do that. I was able to rehome her several years later and her owner told me she was the perfect horse. This was because I focused on getting excited and rewarded the small stuff.

Listen, you can opt out of grace and beat yourself with discipline or you can love yourself into your identity. Jesus loved you enough to go through hell because he wanted you to understand how much He believes in you. Don’t rob him by thinking less of yourself than He does.
